Frequently Asked Questions

1. Where are you located? 2586 South County Rd. 225 West Paoli, Indiana 47454

2. How can I see your dogs? Please check our Facebook page, Petfinder page, or email us at GreatBabiesRescueOperations@yahoo.com. We do all meet and greets with an approved adoption application.

3. So where are the dogs now? Most of our dogs are housed at Great Babies Rescue in Paoli, IN. We do have quite a few dogs in foster homes. Once your application is approved, you can meet the dogs either at an adoption event or at a planned meeting.

4. What is your adoption process? The first step is to fill the application out online. Please fill it out in its entirety and tell us as much about yourself as possible – the more information we get the better we can match you with the right dog. We do three reference checks (only 1 can be a family member and partners/ spouses do not count) and a vet check for currently or recently owned pets (if applicable). Then we do a home visit. Your application is not approved until the home visit has been done. Before going through the application process, please familiarize yourself with the terms of our adoption contract.

5. How do I apply?

6. What is your adoption fee? $450.00 It is non-negotiable.

7. What does your adoption fee include? All of our adult dogs are spayed/neutered (age appropriate), and vaccinated (age appropriate) with rabies, DHPP and bordetella. We keep the dogs up-to-date on flea and heartworm preventative and do a heartworm test. If we know about an illness or injury when we rescue the dog, we do our best to take care of those vet costs before adoption. For puppies too young to have received all their shots and spay/neuter, we give at least one round of DHPP. The adopter is responsible for covering the cost of all booster shots and spay/neuter after adoption. We can recommend low cost spay/neuter programs and vets who accept certificates.

8. I sent in my application, now what? Once we get your application we begin processing it. All of our staff are volunteers with full time jobs so we ask that you give us 7-14 days to process your application. Please notify your references that we will be contacting them so they can look out for our email or phone call. We will also connect you to a volunteer to do your home visit. Once you’re approved you’re good to adopt any of our dogs and we work with you to find the right match.

9. I want to adopt but am not sure I’m ready for the commitment. Can I foster a dog first and see how it goes? Fostering is an integral part of the rescue process and a big commitment as well. Fostering is, in many ways, harder than adopting. Our foster program is not designed for potential adopters to ‘test’ out dogs. If you are not sure you are ready to commit, then you are probably not ready to commit. If you feel that you have what it takes to foster and are interested in helping the rescue, we are always looking for foster homes to help save more dogs. If you are interested in fostering please fill out our foster application. The foster application process is very similar to the adoption process, requiring references and a home visit.

10. But how do I know if the dog is right for me? Picking a dog is a big deal! This is a lifelong commitment and you are adding a new family member! You should think long and hard about the time and financial commitment involved in having a dog before taking one into your life. You might meet several dogs before making a decision. We work with you to make the right match and are happy to talk through what dogs might be right for your lifestyle. Keep in mind that we have many applications and do not reserve dogs, so if there is a dog that you are thinking about but haven’t committed to, there is a chance the dog might get adopted by someone else.

11. I like a dog on your site but I was told he/she no longer available — what gives? We try and keep our listings as updated as possible but sometimes the internet gets the better of us! Dogs may get adopted locally and are not taken off right away. We try our best but we’re human and things get missed. Please always feel free to reach out to us and find out about the dog you want!

12. I would like to volunteer. What kinds of things can I do? Please fill out the Volunteer form. Please give us an idea of your skills, experience and how much time you think you can commit. We always need volunteers for different kinds of activities — from cleaning crates, giving baths, bottle feeding (when applicable), handling dogs at adoption events to helping with outreach and fundraising. There are many ways to help!

13. I’d like to foster a dog. What’s involved? Please read the foster FAQ and fill out the application online. We ask that our fosters commit to fostering the dog until the dog is adopted (to minimize shuffling around). Some dogs only need a foster for a few nights from arrival to adoption. Some dogs get adopted within a few weeks, others take a few months. The average time is approximately 4-6 weeks. You need to be able to get your dog to events and be open to meeting potential adopters during the week. We love our fosters!!!

14. I’d like to donate food/crates/leashes/toys/etc. How can I do this? Dog items can be dropped off at our events, sent directly to Great Babies Rescue in Indiana or we can make arrangements to come and pick up.

15. What’s different about you versus other rescues? At Great Babies Rescue, we really try and create a sense of family and community. Many of our adopters stop by events with their pups — who we could not be happier to see! We love making people part of the Great Babies team! And the true testament is the number of happy adopters who refer their friends and family to us!
